As featured in the first book, Anatomy of a Ghost,  the Paranormal Rockstars series are based on three men that attempted to  to research the paranormal field using scientific methodlogies. Henry Sidgwick, F.W. Myers and Edmund Gurney,  were the fathers of modern paranormal research. Together they founded the Society for Psychical Research in 1882.  The SPR was the first organization to look at paranormal phenomena from a scientific perspective. Some of the greatest minds of the day were members, sometimes to the detriment of their careers.  
 
Henry Sidgwick was an English  philosopher and economist and is best known in philosophy for his utilitarian treatise The Methods of Ethics.  He was the Knightbridge Professor of Moral Philosophy at the University of Cambridge from 1883 until his death. And he was one of the founders and first president of the Society for Psychical Research and a member of the Metaphysical Society.
